How to turn a boring wall into a masterpiece

I lost count of how many times my little family and I have moved in the last few years. With each move, I've had to get rid of many things that no longer fit in the next garage, shed, or under the driveway. But there are a few pieces of furniture and trinkets that have stayed with me through several seasons.

About twelve years ago, we sold our comfortable home to venture into the unfamiliar world of renting. That first initial move was necessary to live closer to the kids' special schools at the time. What I didn't know was that a full decade would go by before we would buy another home and settle down. The funny thing is, once we felt ready to get a home, we ended up just a few blocks away from our original one. Sometimes I even walk by just to reminisce about raising my little ones in that neighborhood.

During that decade, many things happened. Or, as I see it in my writer's mind, many stories were written in the notebook of my family’s mind. Some are very good ones that I never want to forget, while others are stories I am still healing from.

A Season of Healing

This past year has been particularly precious for me. It has been a year of healing, nurturing my soul, and simply being present in life as it is. Something that's not normal for me is that after a year, my house walls are still pretty much bare. I'm a bit hyperactive and absolutely love to clean and decorate my home. I am what people in America would call a “homebody.” I could literally stay home all day for days without missing a thing. I can find endless projects to keep me busy that bring me so much joy.

But when we moved into this home, I literally entered with the assistance of a walking cane. I remember my mom was with me at the time, and she followed me to the master bedroom, where my husband had placed our mattress on the floor for me to lay down while the rest of our stuff was moved into the house.

As depressing as that might sound, I was actually very excited. Being sick wasn't new to me at the time, but moving into my own home was. That brought me so much hope for the future.

One thing I know for sure now, is that I am on a mission to transform my boring white walls into something that inspires me daily, like every single time I look at them. So here we go.

The Decorating Journey Begins

Long story short, after learning to somewhat tame my hyper vibes, I have been blessed to recover enough that I can now shift my focus to making my home a place that not only looks like my family and I live here but also feels like home.

In the past, I designed some wallpaper repeats thinking of adding them to my new place, and now is the time to dust these babies out of my drive and put them to work.

My Plan to Transform Our Home

So first things first, I did a tour of my home, took a few pictures, and then looked at them with intention. I jotted down some ideas. I plan to immerse myself in this during the end of summer and fall to see how many spaces I can get done before the holidays arrive. Because for the holidays, I just want to make buñuelos and watch Christmas movies with the kids during school break. Also, I am not looking forward to doing any home projects that might require me to come in and out of the house during the freezing winter days of Utah.

This is part one of a series. I'm not sure how many parts it will have yet. All I know is that this is the beginning of something good, and I couldn't be more excited about it.
